Lifestyles for the Disabled offers a comprehensive approach to training and preparing developmentally disabled adults for the world of work, independent transportation, and possible independent living. Individualized work programs are designed around specific employment gals and support needs for each individual consumer. Consumers are individually placed in environments in accordance with their specific job goals and abilities.
We train and prepare our consumers to reach their valued outcomes within the community. Lifestyles offers consumers a diverse number of job trainings and work opportunities in order to prepare them for competitive employment situation.
Some of these work programs include, but are not limited to: food service and catering skills in our caffe, housekeeping, horticultural skills in our greenhouse, woodworking, laundry service, and computer skills.
Ultimately, our program provides the means for people with mild to severe disabilities to develop self- respect and to obtain valued functioning roles within their community.
Families, guardians and advocates play a very important part in the success of this program, by helping plan specific goals for the consumer in program. Additionally, family conferences are held to assess individual growth, and to provide the opportunity to recommend program enhancements. Family members are also asked to cooperate in the transportation training, so the consumer can become travel independent as soon as possible.
Lifestyles will provide transportation to its Day Habilitation consumers who are not travel trained and require round trip transportation to and from their residences. Lifestyles also offers travel training for consumers who are able to use public transportation and travel independently. Family members are also asked to cooperate in the transportation training, so the consumer can become travel independent as soon as possible. Transportation within the program will also be provided, allowing consumers to work at multiple work sites on Staten Island.
