Lifestyles provides consumers the opportunity to participate in our Respite Program, taking evening and weekend trips. These trips bring consumers out into the community, and help to promote community inclusion and increased opportunities for socialization.
Popular evening trips include going to the local movie theater to see a new release and then going out to dinner, often to Applebee’s or Perkins. During the baseball season, we get tickets to go see the Staten Island Yankees, and there is usually one trip a week that goes to the game. Additionally, all day trips to the Brooklyn Museum and the New York Aquarium are often planned over a weekend so the consumers have more time to see the exhibits on display.
Overnight weekend trips are also available to consumers who have the ability and skills needed to be away from their house for an extended period of time. These overnight trips allow consumers to travel off of Staten Island, stay in a hotel, and help develop independent living skills.
One of the most popular Respite trips is run during the summer, where a rotating group of consumers travel to Bradley Beach, New Jersey to stay at our beach house for three days and two nights. While in Bradley Beach, consumers get the chance to visit the beach, go shopping, eat out at local restaurants, go bowling and visit the local movie theater.
In addition to Bradley Beach, the respite program takes a yearly trip to Cooperstown, New York. This is a great trip for any baseball lover, with the main focus of the trip being on the Baseball Hall of Fame. Here consumers get to learn about the history of the game and the famous players that have play over the years.
On any given respite trip, consumers will dine out, visit educational site, go to historical locations, and socialize in the community. In addition, trips are also taken to the Transition House, located in the Eltingville section of Staten Island. Here consumers can cook, clean, watch movies, and socialize with their peers in a domestic type of environment.
