Community Habilitation Services

People holding hands and praying over open Bibles.

Serving Staten Island, New York, for over 25 years, Lifestyles for the Disabled is dedicated to providing recreational and vocational opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities. Among these services is Community Habilitation, which offers a tailored program of social skills activities designed to promote independent living for individuals with developmental disabilities. Once participants complete the Community Habilitation activities, they will be better equipped to engage fully within their community.

Participating in the Community Habilitation program enables individuals with developmental disabilities to engage in social skills activities designed for adults, equipping them for a more independent living experience and a successful future. By partaking in these social skills activities, participants can identify their personal goals and learn the steps necessary to achieve them. This program offers an excellent opportunity to enhance communication skills, explore new experiences, and cultivate lifelong interests and abilities.

Furthermore, the program emphasizes a person-centered approach, allowing individuals to take charge of their services. Each program is unique, fostering a stronger voice for individuals as they shape their future. Upon completing the program, participants will be better prepared for independent living and feel like fully integrated members of their community.

What is Community Habilitation?

Community Habilitation is a truly person-centered opportunity that provides a one-on-one experience for individuals with developmental disabilities to build a unique set of skills. Participants can choose which social skills activities to pursue while working out a custom-made schedule. The goal is to enhance an individual’s community integration and promote independent living.

Just a few Community Habilitation opportunities include, but are not limited to:

- Shopping for food

- Purchasing clothing

- Creating a workout routine

- Maintaining healthy eating choices

- Travel skills

- Money management

- Leisure activities

Development of other skills that support inclusion and foster healthy relationships.

Upon completing the program, participants will be better prepared for full inclusion within the community and experience greater independence in their daily lives.

Who can participate?

Lifestyles for the Disabled programming, which includes Community Habilitation, Day Habilitation, Employment Options & Services, and more, supports over 400 adults with developmental disabilities. These lifestyle programs, aimed at fostering independent living, operate from Monday through Friday throughout the year. Community Habilitation participants have the flexibility to design a personalized schedule that caters to their individual needs, enhancing their social skills activities.

To join the Community Habilitation program, individuals need to meet these requirements:
